Are you planning to buy a surfboard? Read this first

Is that board you’re checking fits you well? Are you aware that your weight, height and talent level will indicate what exactly is the perfect surfboard for you? Before choosing a surfboard, think about what kind of waves are you planning to ride.

So that you can choose the ideal surfboard for you, we named the types of boards and basic info on them.

A longboard is 9 to 12 feet long. Longboards are wider and bigger as compared to other boards. These boards have a one center fin. But sometimes, you will see boards with 2 side fins. The tails are typically flat or rounded ones. You might want to ride a longboard if the waves in your area are small. Longboards are perfect for newbies due to its size and consistency of catching waves. However, due to their sheer size, you will have a longer paddle time in front of you. But once you start going, you’ll enjoy just how sleek they glide. For intermediates, longboards will allow you to smoothen out your technique. What’s good about longboard is that you may ride the big waves as well as the little ones. Let’s face it, longboards aren’t the coolest looking with the bunch. But, these boards assure a much longer surf time all year round.

Compared to longboards, funboards are a lot shorter — typically six to eight feet long. They’re what we typically call as “Malibu designs”. They are suitable for intermediate surfers who are shifting from longboards towards the flashier ones. It is adaptable because you can ride it on small, mushy waves up to overheads. Funboards and longboards have the same layout: rounded nose, wide, thick and square tails. They can have a single fin or a 2 plus 1 set up – in which you have a long center fin in the middle of two smaller fins that provide you extra balance and control.

A fish is usually a shorter board – around 5 ½ to 6 feet in length. It features a wide and thick body with rounded nose and wide tail – just like a FISH! This board can have a twin fin or a quad (4) fin design. You can use this board for point breaks. Because of its width and length, you can be assured that even riding a small wave is fulfilling.

A gun is a narrow, long board typically 6 to 10 feet in length. Compared to shortboards, a gun is more fitted to big waves.

How?

Well, a longer, narrower board allows for a longer rail line. While a wider board is busy pushing the water away from it – or displacement – a gun just glides on top of it.

Shortboards are great for areas where waves are sharp — just like those found in Hawaii. These boards provide better maneuverability and manageability in contrast to the longboard. Shortboards are thinner and have more rockers.Usually, a shortboard has three fins. But there are new designs available in the market that has four fins.

When to use a shortboard?

If living inside the barrel is your thing, go for it. If the waves are at their highest in months and you are wishing to go up on them, then ride with a shortboard.
